It's been a challenging couple of weeks but Glenachulish is now in service at Stromeferry during the closure of the A890. We have interrupted our winter maintenance schedule to help re-connect Lochcarron with Kyle. There has been endless debate with Highland Council about moorings, opening times, making the slipways safe, welding parts on the boat to enable port-side landing etc etc.. However, we

Tony Milsom has just sent us this photo from 1970 showing one of the previous boats, the Glen Mallie, beginning to unload at the Kylerhea slipway. Looks like a beuatiful sunny day - we could do with some more of those.

This flyer is from 1972. The ticket price is now in decimal coinage but actually hasn't gone up since the 1968 flyer. Interesting to see the price for a 'caravanette' at 62 and a half pence! Must have been a nightmare dealing with the change.

Many apologies to customers who have missed us - we haven't been sailing for the last few days because of a mechanical failure (something to do with the alternator I'm told by those in the know). As those of you with old boats or cars know, no matter how much time and money you spend on them things will go wrong sometimes. However, weather permitting we should be sailing again on Thursday.

A pair of white-tailed eagles spotted from the Ferry this afternoon. Too far away to get a decent picture unfortunately. Hopefully they are scouting out nest sites for next year.

David Aris from Kendal brought us this old leaflet today. Interesting that although the ferry in 1968 was only open from May to the end of September and we now open Easter to mid-October, the opening hours were much longer. No Sunday service though. The cost of a single journey at 10 shillings (50p in todays money) is roughly equivalent to the current cost.

John Bander visited the Ferry yesterday.He used to skipper the Glenachulish in the very early 1970's when she was still serving the Ballachulish crossing before the bridge was built. Its the first time he's been on board since. He says she hasn't changed much except the wheelhouse used to be green, and there were red stylings on a black hull. Maybe next season.

At very low tide we sometimes need to load cars from the end of the slip rather than the side (what we call a T-bone loading). This requires us to sail rather alarmingly close to the shore as can be seen in this picture. Don't worry, Roddy and Donnie have everything in hand. (Photo by Margaret Jack)

Lots of birding interest over the last week or so. We have seen two arctic skuas and a whole flock of gannets - unusual in coastal waters and probably blown in by the recent bad weather. Also a return of our white-tailed eagle. Last years white-tailed eagle chick has been spotted on Orkney.

Well,we've been back in the water taking passengers for a week now and although its a bit slow it has given us the chance to get back into the swing of things and to finish off a bit of painting. The new vehicle ramps are now a rather fetching red. Come and visit us soon for a cup of coffee and a chat (and obviously to bob across the water and spot wildlife).

Several people have asked how we decide on our repair schedule for the Glenachulish.In order to provide a service we have to be licensed by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (they give us something called a Passenger Loadline Exemption Certificate). Every 5 years this needs to be renewed and the MCA tell us what we need to do on the boat to be re-licensed (this year, new drive shaft, new vehicle
